   В редакции Чарли подает заявление об увольнении. Другой журнал предложил ему желанную должность, которой он никогда не сможет добиться в «Аллюре»: пост главного редактора.    Возвращение в реальность. Лайза рассказывает психоаналитику о 2 унижениях, пережитых ею в детстве и юности. Ее мать была очень элегантной женщиной и пользовалась большим успехом у мужчин. Как-то вечером друзья стали насмехаться над тем, что ее дочь Лайза совсем на нее не похожа. С тех пор в ребенке поселился стыд и огромный комплекс неполноценности. Мать вскоре умерла. Однажды Лайза захотела порадовать отца и надеть платье матери - но вдруг натолкнулась на жесткий запрет. В колледже она с головой ушла в учебу. И все же однажды согласилась пойти на свидание с самым популярным парнем школы, когда тот поссорился со своей девушкой Барбарой. Однако в разгар танцев он бросил Лайзу и пошел к Барбаре. Психоаналитик говорит Лайзе, что ее случай прост: сознавая превосходство мужчин над собою и мучаясь от старых душевных ран, она захотела всех превзойти в профессии, подавляя собственную женскую природу. Лайза словно освобождена этим объяснением. Кендалл понимает, что она никогда не выйдет за него.    ► Эта экранизация знаменитой пьесы Мосса Харта (на музыку Курта Вайля) - один из самых необычных фильмов Митчелла Лайсена и голливудского кинематографа тех лет. Лайсен впервые затронул тему психоанализа в своем предыдущем фильме Нет времени на любовь, Nо Time for Love, 1943, своеобразном черновике Дамы в потемках, у которого эта картина могла бы позаимствовать название (в Нет времени на любовь Лайсен также впервые для себя снял эпизод сновидения). Но в Даме в потемках, 1-м цветном фильме Лайсена, психоанализ становится основным стержнем сюжета. Голливудские кинорежиссеры начали говорить о психоанализе в нуарах, но его появление в мюзикле было куда более неожиданным шагом. Впрочем, в этом фильме Лайсен все время играет на необычности, непривычности, барочности, замешательстве. Он пытается выразить серьезное через ничтожные мелочи, вывести на поверхность все, что спрятано глубоко внутри, придавая этому нарочито поверхностный и декоративный вид. Секрет успеха - в контрастных интонациях и удивительной работе с цветом и костюмами. Этот фильм - честная попытка передать психоаналитический метод пластическими средствами.

   Главная героиня совершает поспешное путешествие в глубины своего сознания и возвращается с целым набором образов из сновидений, иногда агрессивных и вульгарных (которые в наши дни сойдут за китч); во всяком случае, выбивающихся из гармонии и приличий, превосходящих по смелости большинство подобных эпизодов в фильмах Миннелли и Кьюкора, которых Лайсен, впрочем, опережает в этой области. Рассказывая историю женщины, которой психоанализ возвращает женственность и интерес к противоположному полу, Лайсен, возможно, не без удовольствия затронул какие-то автобиографические мотивы. Так или иначе, в психологическом и формальном отношении Дама в потемках обладает той интонацией удивительного внутреннего приключения, которое делает столь привлекательными, несмотря на их недостатки (в данном случае - чрезмерное обилие диалогов и иногда невероятный подбор актеров), большую часть фильмов Лайсена.

   N.В. Сложности, с которыми пришлось столкнуться на съемках создателям этого весьма масштабного проекта (в том числе - разногласия между Лайсеном и Джинджер Роджерз), еще больше усилили его авантюрный характер. Они не помешали фильму снискать огромный успех, который в наше время удивляет не меньше, чем успех Французовой бухты, The Frenchman's Creek.

   Из эпизода последнего сеанса у психоаналитика были вырезаны 2 сцены. Обе располагались не во сне, а во флэшбеке, рассказывающем о подростковых годах Лайзы.    Из главного кафе городка Мелани звонит отцу и рассказывает, что происходит. Пожилая женщина, специалистка по орнитологии, громко говорит, что не верит в агрессивное поведение птиц. Некий моряк утверждает, что чайки искромсали его лодку. Случайный пьянчужка кричит, что пришел конец света. На соседней площади служащего заправочной станции, заполняющего автомобильный бак бензином, атакуют птицы; бензин выливается на шоссе. Неподалеку некий автомобилист кидает на землю спичку - и немедленно вспыхивает вместе с машиной. Разгорается пожар. Чайки спускаются на город, словно решив взять его штурмом. Мелани скрывается в телефонной кабине, о стеклянные стенки которой яростно бьются птицы. Митч отводит Мелани в кафе, где некая перепуганная мать обвиняет ее во всех случившихся несчастьях.

   Митч и Мелани отправляются в школу за Кэти: перед входной дверью они видят труп Энни. Кэти в слезах объясняет, что учительница пожертвовала жизнью ради ее спасения. Вечером Митч плотно законопачивает все отверстия в доме. Укрывшись в четырех стенах, вся семья в ужасе слушает гвалт, поднятый птицами снаружи. 1-я атака отбита: птицам не удается проникнуть в дом, поскольку Митч смог закрыть створку, через которую они пытались прорваться (при этом чайки разодрали ему клювами руку), и в доме воцаряется шаткое спокойствие. Пока все обитатели дремлют, Мелани поднимается на чердак и обнаруживает в крыше дыру. Птицы, проникшие на чердак, в бешенстве набрасываются на нее, проявляя невероятную свирепость.    ► С 1954 (Окно во двор, Rear Window) по 1963 г., меньше чем за 10 лет, Хичкок выпустил совершенно уникальную в истории кино череду из 9 шедевров, и каждый раскрывает его мир под новым углом и досконально исследует одну или несколько фундаментальных возможностей кинематографа. За исключением довольно проходного фильма Поймать вора, То Catch a Thief, 1955 и Неприятностей с Гарри, The Trouble with Harry, абсолютного шедевра, но предназначенного для избранной публики, фильмы, входящие в эту серию, универсальны и понятны каждому зрителю. Птицы - последний из них, и эту картину можно рассматривать как завещание режиссера и завершение его формальных экспериментов.    Сценарист Эван Хантер (он же Эд Макбейн) выказывал недовольство тем, как обошелся со сценарием Хичкок, публично критиковавший некоторые его «слабости». (В рассказе Дафны Дю Морье атаку птиц переживала всего 1 семья корнуоллских крестьян без каких-либо индивидуальных проблем. Хичкок перенес действие в Бодега-Бэй - деревушку, которую он заметил, снимая неподалеку в Санта-Розе Тень сомнения, Shadow of a Doubt.    Подготовка к съемкам была одной из самых долгих, самых тщательных и самых дорогостоящих за всю карьеру Хичкока, который на этот раз окружил себя самыми драгоценными сотрудниками; в их числе были: его привычный оператор Роберт Бёркс, Лоуренс Э.    Актеры (и в особенности Типпи Хедрен) отдавали себя без остатка, лишь бы фильм достиг той пугающей реалистичности, которой добивался режиссер. Сцена с чердаком, занимающая около 2 мин экранного времени, потребовала недели съемок, и лишь в последний момент Хедрен предупредили, что ей придется столкнуться с живыми птицами. Камера снимала, как она обороняется от птиц - это было ее основным занятием в течение этого времени, которое она назвала „худшей неделей в моей жизни“… Типпи Хедрен рассказывает, что представители гуманитарной организации следили за тем, чтобы ни одна птица не пострадала на съемках. „Ровно в 5 часов, - вспоминает она, - один из них кричал: 'Достаточно! Птицы устали!'“… В конце сцены на чердаке Мелани лежит на полу под ударами птичьих клювов.    После выхода фильма на экраны критика приняла его сдержанно. Некоторые сожалели, что в фильме отсутствует рациональное объяснение поведения птиц (сам Хичкок объяснял, что причиной подобных реакций у птиц было, несомненно, бешенство; пресса сообщала о нескольких подобных случаях в окрестностях Лос-Анджелеса, что и подсказало ему идею фильма). Но разве нельзя не заметить, что необъяснимость их поведения - неотъемлемый элемент фильма, что тем самым режиссер говорит о неспособности человечества смириться с жестокостью природы, всеобщим хаосом и непониманием смысла вселенной? Апокалипсис, Страшный суд (гипотеза, поддержанная Хичкоком в его интервью Питеру Богдановичу «Кинематограф Алфреда Хичкока» [The Cinema of Alfred Hitchcock, Museum of Modern Art, 1963]), библейская казнь, которой подвергает человека гневный и мстительный бог - все толкования происходящего должны оставаться открытыми и при этом как можно больше запутывать зрителя, чтобы все нравственные и метафизические вопросы, поднятые в десятках предыдущих фильмов Хичкока, смогли вновь подняться на поверхность и вновь блеснуть с небывало ощутимой и впечатляющей силой.    ► Все необычно в этом крайне утонченном фильме, который, как говорят, после неоднократных превышений бюджета и съемок, растянувшихся на 104 дня, стал самой дорогой кинокартиной на тот момент. От сюжета ждешь приключенческих коллизий, однако фильм превращается в волшебную фантазию Лайсена, построенную на образах главных героев, чем-то похожих на самого режиссера. В самом деле, и пират, и леди - эстеты, бегущие от обыденности в мир блеска, игры, развлечений и свободы. Многословные и литературные диалоги хорошо отражают трезвый взгляд персонажей - и автора - на поиски идеала, который, разумеется, недостижим.

   У Лайсена, только что закончившего Даму в потёмках, Lady in the Dark, было мало времени на подготовку к съемкам. Он занимался в основном декорациями, костюмами и реквизитом, необычно роскошными для американского кино. The grandes écoles are relatively small and highly respected higher education establishments. Admission is usually only possible after two years of intensive preparatory studies and a competitive entrance examination. Most have close links with industry. The grandes écoles include l'École des hautes études commerciales or HEC (management and business), l'École polytechnique or l'X (engineering) and l'École normale supérieure (teacher training).
